How would you describe yourself or your work in one sentence?
Inclusive. Progressive. Athletic.
Tell us a little about what you do
Murder City Roller Derby is a roller derby league that amplifies inclusivity and community within their sporting league.
MCRD showcases their athleticism through home team bouts, Fringe Festival bouts, and a Feast Festival + Pride Cup bout.
What impact or achievement are you most proud of this year?
MCRD have annual Pride Cups during the Feast Festival, donate specific event profits to the Queer Youth Drop in Centre, and join in as many queer sporting events as they can. MCRD have education sessions provided by Pride Cup and encourage all their members, as well as inviting other leagues, to attend these education sessions.
MCRD have accessible events, located at accessibility friendly venues, providing low costs tickets, having discounted ticket options, and donating too many tickets to count to queer lead organisations.
MCRD have been able to donate approximately $2000 to the Queer Youth Drop in Centre since they started donating.
MCRD are incredibly proud to have an incredibly queer presence in the sporting world.
Why does your work matter to the community?
Queer and gender diverse people face a lot of barriers to participation in sport, and MCRD attempts to breakdown these barriers for members and those wanting to join.
MCRD support queer people of all ages, with intake starting at 17 and no age limit for older adults, as well as donating to the Queer Youth Drop in Centre, which supports queer young people
What would you like voters to know when voting for you?
MCRD are one of a very little amount of sporting groups who dedicate a large amount of time and money trying to break down barriers for queer people joining sports groups. MCRD have queer people at the forefront of what they do, and support the queer community in as many ways as they can. MCRD is completely ran by volunteers, meaning all of the work their members do is unpaid and done solely to support their members and the queer community.
