How would you describe yourself or your work in one sentence?

A celebration of trans, non-binary, and genderqueer joy.

Tell us a little about what you do

Gender Reveal is a recurring variety show platforming trans, non-binary, genderqueer and gender questioning artists. Concepted by local performer Starling Strix when they were first trying to figure out their own gender identity, Gender Reveal gives artists an open access stage to explore and interrogate their gender identity, or to share their most gender euphoric acts. Turning the concept of a gender reveal on its head, this event is a big party for the trans community and its allies, celebrating the beauty and diversity of trans art and trans bodies in all their forms.

What impact or achievement are you most proud of this year?

Gender Reveal has run and supported three sold out shows, one of them a fundraiser that brought in over $3300 for a local artist's top surgery. Gender Reveal has so far platformed over 20 trans, non-binary, and gender-questioning artists.

Why does your work matter to the community?

We may not be changing the world, but we are creating a space where Adelaide's trans, non-binary, and gender-questioning community can feel safe and seen for one night of celebration. Platforming trans art is more important now than ever, from emotional acts to pieces that simply celebrate the joy and beauty of being trans. Both performers and audience are given a safe space to explore their feelings aroun gender, whether that happens onstage or off. Gender Reveal is open to anyone who chooses to apply, which has included new artists performing debut acts, as well as two interstate guests who have travelled to share their stories with our local community. Gender Reveal has also worked with visual artists in the trans community, commissioning two genderqueer visual artists for show posters, and providing them space to sell their work at shows.

What would you like voters to know when voting for you?

Creating space to celebrate trans joy and trans art is more important now than it has ever been.
