How would you describe yourself or your work in one sentence?

Diverse-City - Bringing People Together!

Tell us a little about what you do

Diverse-City is a small but astonishing group of people who live their colourful queer creed, yet extend it to all who visit. Maybe Diverse-City is a place best described as where passion aligns with purpose.

Day in and day out, the staff collectively create events and spaces where everyone can feel safe, meet new people, learn something new and be proud of who they are within or outside the LGBTIQA+ community.

What impact or achievement are you most proud of this year?

Need to talk to someone, they wipe their hands and pull up a chair; want to discuss a special occasion, they will take time to get to know you and make every effort to ensure your event is extra special to you!

At Diverse-City, they outwork their ordinary…they shift their priorities to focus on the work that actually matters, often choosing to establish connections between people, educate, support and assist patrons and performers over their own daily demands.

They’ve undertaken suicide preventions training, driven staff and guest home or to hospital when needed (and stayed with them!) and Sarah is currently undertaking AUSLAN at TAFE to ensure the venue offers a more inclusive environment.

On any given day the team manage many curveballs, staff shortages, event changes, diagnoses, rising budgets, customer crises, and then there’s the daily running of the business! When others would think it’s all too much, the staff band together, roll up their sleeves and get on with it.

One of the things we love most is that Diverse-City has built a culture where people don’t have to show up as a ‘version’ of themselves to fit in, they encourage honesty and authenticity in others and reward such with respect, warmth and welcome.

Why does your work matter to the community?

It’s pretty simple really. No division, just respect.

One of the things we love most is that Diverse-City has built a culture where people don’t have to show up as a ‘version’ of themselves to fit in, they encourage honesty and authenticity in others and reward such with respect, warmth and welcome.

“What would it look like to add just a little more intention, courage or care?” Visit Diverse-City – you’ll soon find out!

What would you like voters to know when voting for you?

Thats easy! We need more authentic, safe and welcoming queer spaces in Adelaide run by people who "see us". And, they’re privately funded…IKR...they're crazy!
