How would you describe yourself or your work in one sentence?
Honouring fifty years of progress while connecting generations of LGBTQIA+ activists.
Tell us a little about what you do
The Big Five-O: Activism Then and Now was presented by Thorne Harbour Health as part of the Feast Festival program on Sunday 16 November 2025. Supported through a Grant for Seniors from the Office of Ageing Well, the event brought together community members to mark fifty years since the decriminalisation of sex between men in South Australia.
The event explored the social and political conditions that led to this historic reform while creating space for conversation across generations. Participants reflected on the courage of early activists, the challenges faced by the community, and the ongoing work required to protect and advance equality. Fifty-eight attendees took part in a program that combined storytelling, discussion and reflection on the journey of LGBTQIA+ rights in South Australia.
What impact or achievement are you most proud of this year?
The event commemorated the fiftieth anniversary of decriminalisation in South Australia while capturing lived experiences from activists and community members who shaped the movement. By bringing these voices together in a shared space, the event strengthened historical understanding and ensured community knowledge continues to be passed to future generations.
Why does your work matter to the community?
Community history forms the foundation of progress. The Big Five-O recognised the people who fought for change and reminded attendees how collective action shaped the freedoms enjoyed today. By documenting stories and encouraging intergenerational dialogue, the event strengthened connection, identity and pride within the South Australian LGBTQIA+ community.
What would you like voters to know when voting for you?
The Big Five-O created a moment of reflection and recognition for one of the most significant milestones in South Australia’s LGBTQIA+ history. The event honoured activists, educated the community and preserved stories that shaped the path toward equality.
