How would you describe yourself or your work in one sentence?
The Adelaide Spectres are South Australia’s premier LGBTQIA+ inclusive basketball club
Tell us a little about what you do
The Adelaide Spectres are committed to creating a vibrant, inclusive basketball community — welcoming players, referees, coaches, and fans of all skill levels and backgrounds. We run a weekly 'Train & Play' basketball session that brings together players of all skill levels in a fun, inclusive, and low-pressure environment.
We are part of Spectres Australia with teams present in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Cairns. Through this network we participate in a yearly Pride Basketball Tournament, bringing together players from across the country to celebrate inclusion in sport.
What impact or achievement are you most proud of this year?
This year the Adelaide Spectres continued to grow our inclusive basketball community through our weekly Train & Play sessions. We have created a welcoming, inclusive, friendly environment where people of all skill levels can learn the game and connect. The sessions are free for participants significantly lowering the barrier to participation.
The Spectres also help connect players into local social basketball leagues across Adelaide, supporting participants who want to take the next step into regular competition. By encouraging participation in both inclusive and mainstream competitions, we help build confidence, skills, and stronger connections across the wider basketball community.
Through our connection with Spectres Australia, we are also helping strengthen a national network of LGBTQIA+ basketball teams. Adelaide players have participated in the Pride Basketball Tournament in Sydney for the past two years. We're helping to create visible, welcoming spaces in sport where LGBTQIA+ people and allies can play.
Why does your work matter to the community?
Basketball has not always felt like a safe or inclusive environment. Through the Adelaide Spectres we are looking to change this by creating a safe place where people can be themselves, learn or re-connect with the sport, and build friendships and a community. By creating visible LGBTQIA+ participation in sport we are helping to make basketball accessible for all.
What would you like voters to know when voting for you?
We are a volunteer-driven community club built on inclusion and connection. Voting for our club recognises the players, organisers, and supporters who give their time to create a welcoming space in sport.
