Ian Purcell AM

2024

Ian Purcell AM was one of South Australia’s fiercest champions for LGBTQIA+ rights, equity, and justice. A long-time activist, advocate, and community leader, Ian’s work helped shape the state’s proud history of progressive reform — from anti-discrimination legislation to HIV/AIDS advocacy and beyond.

Often referred to as “the godfather of gay rights in SA,” Ian was a founding member of the South Australian AIDS Action Committee (now SAMESH) and a tireless campaigner for social justice across housing, health, and human rights. His appointment as a member of the Social Inclusion Board and as a Justice of the Peace was a testament to his standing in both the queer community and the broader public sphere.

Passionate about visibility and unity, Ian believed in the power of collaboration. He mentored young leaders, supported grassroots groups, and never stopped fighting for those whose voices were marginalised. In 2003, he was made a Member of the Order of Australia for service to the community — a recognition that only begins to reflect his true impact.

Inducted posthumously into the South Australian Pride Hall of Fame in 2024, Ian’s legacy endures in the freedoms we celebrate today and the work that continues in his honour.
